Pinnancle practice: Safeguarding inclusion in the sporting arena

Topics covered in this course include;

  • Challenges in sport and growing up with a disability and wanting to participate in mainstream sport
  • Why discovering wheelchair basketball as a spectator was so valuable for Bridie's life
  • Opportunities and challenges in a sporting career in relation to diversity and equity
  • Wheelchair basketball as a model for equity in sport - embracing diverse abilities in teams so they are working in synergy
  • Reverse integration and future opportunities for inclusion in sport


About the Presenters:

Brendan Powell, BEd., MBA, is the Co-owner and Director, Business Operations, of Queensland Oztag

Brendan has written and developed a number of community based programs including the Mooroo-Mooroo Indigenous program - a free program to improve the physical and mental health of Indigenous communities through participation in sport. To date participation in Far North Qld and the South-east exceeds 11,000 people. Brendan has also implemented a Correctional Services program that was successfully piloted at Woodford Prison in 2012 with 80 inmates participating. In 2009 Brendan implemented a Primary Schools program.

His dedication and commitment to indigenous education is also exemplified by membership on various committees including: Vice Chancellor’s Indigenous Advisory Committee; Sunshine Coast Indigenous Network Group; Wanna Be Deadly Program, and as a guest speaker to primary school students and international education students on exchange from the State University of New York. Brendan graduated with a Masters of Business Administration from USC in 2006.


Brendan Powell


Bridie Kean, QAS Research Scholar, USC Tutor, Health Science

Bridie Kean is an Australian Wheelchair Basketball Paralympic dual medallist. She captained the Australian Gliders Wheelchair Basketball team to a Silver medal at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and was a member of the bronze medal winning in team in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic games. During her international career from 2008 - 2015, she received a full athletic scholarship to play collegiate basketball at the University of Illinois (2008 - 2011), was the first Australian female to play professionally in the German National League, where she won a National Championship with HSV Hamburg Damen (2013). She has won two National Championship titles in the Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball league in Australia (2014 and 2017).

Bridie is currently undertaking a PhD at USC and is a research scholar Queensland Academy of Sport Centre of Excellence for Applied Sport Science Research (QAS).
