The University of Sydney Institute of Agriculture & Ag Institute Australia would like to announce a FREE event which will feature a range of presentations and a keynote speaker.

This event will start with the General Meeting of the NSW Division of Ag Institute Australia (AIA) and then be dedicated to presenting the medal of Agriculture to Professor Lester Burgess, recognising the success of Stephanie McKillop (CRMofE winner 2019) winning the AIA National Student Award & thanking the support of AIA NSW sponsors – Carbon Count (Phil Mulvey) and AusCott (Ashley Powell).

Our guest Speaker for the evening will be Richard Heath – Executive Director of The Australian Farm Institute who will speak on the current Animal Rights Issues affecting various elements of agriculture in Australia based on AFI research.

Prof Lester Burgess AM is one of Australia's most distinguished Plant Pathologists. He is a former Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Sydney and has held adjunct professorships at the University of Pennsylvania and Kansas state University in the USA. Professor Burgess is a recipient of the Crawford Foundation's highest award - The Crawford Medal - for his contribution to agricultural development in South East Asia and in 2003 the Government of Vietnam awarded him a national medal for Contributions to Rural development. The Australasian Plant Pathology Society created him a Fellow in 1999 and have named the annual "Lester Burgess Awards" in his honour. On Australia Day, 2019 he was appointed as a Member of The Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to international agricultural research in the areas of plant pathology and biosecurity.

Stephanie McKillop from NSW was the 2019 Chris Russell Medal of Excellence winner for the top graduating student from a NSW University based on their final year honours project. She subsequently took out the Ag Institute Australia (AIA) National Student Award (NSA) at their Annual Conference in Hobart, one of the most prestigious honours for agricultural science students across the country, and the People’s Choice award in 2019.

Stephanie’s research topic at the University of Sydney was “Entomology – Soldier flies for protein production and waste reduction”.

Richard Heath is the Executive Director of the Australian Farm Institute and a Director of the Grains Research and Development Corporation. Originally raised on his family cropping farm on the Liverpool Plains- he continued to operate the cropping business on that farm for 20 years following University. Previous to AFI was Associate Professor of Agronomy and Farm Management for the University of Sydney responsible for managing their North West Farms group and was a Director of Nuffield Australia - having been a Nuffield Scholar researching precision application of fertiliser. Richard served for six years on the Northern Panel of the Grains Research and Development Corporation advising on research priorities for the Australian grains industry and also owned a consulting business advising on the application of new technology in Australian agriculture.
