Event description
After the Christchurch shooting, our Prime Minister enacted new social media laws. But what do they mean, and how are users accountable?

About this Event

No one denies that social media can be a breeding ground for harmful and violent activity, but the new laws fail to address the actions of individual users.

Some of the issues to be discussed by our panel include:

  • Has the government just swept the underlying problems with social media under the carpet?
  • What measures are being taken to educate the public about their social media responsibilities, or to implement appropriate laws to punish individual wrongdoers?
  • Could there have been better engagement with the platforms to find a real solution to the social media problems today?
  • Should social media platforms implement a "3-strikes you're out" rule?
  • Is it time for digital ID's?

Let's not wait for another social media catastrophe. It's time to open up discussions about social media rules that everyone can follow.
