Description

We are excited to announce the last AFA Inspire event for 2017.

On White Ribbon Day, come and be inspired by our guest speaker, Maurine Pike QC and Chair of the Zahra Foundation.

Maurine Pyke QC was admitted to the bar in 1973 and commenced practising exclusively as a barrister at the independent bar in 1986. Maurine was appointed Queens Counsel in December 2004.
Maurine’s area of practise has been primarily in Family Law and De Facto Relationship Law.

Maurine has held a number of positions within the legal profession including member of committees of the Law Society, South Australian Bar Association, The Law Council of Australia Family Law Section and a Commissioner of the Legal Services Commission. Maurine is currently the presiding member of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

Maurine’s first involvement in the domestic violence sector was as a member of the board of the Domestic Violence Service located at North Adelaide, approximately, 35 years ago. Maurine was appointed President of the board and has continued in that role in its various iterations ever since. The service is now known as Women’s Safety Services SA.

Maurine authored the South Australia Domestic Violence Laws Discussions and Options for Reform Paper for the South Australian Government in 2007.

The Zahra Foundation was established as an initiative of Arman, Atena and Anita Abrahimzadeh the children of Zahra Abrahimizadeh, following the death of their mother Zahra who was murdered by her estranged husband at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Maureen will talk about her journey and how she became involved with the Foundation.
The Zahra Foundation assists South Australian women and children affected by domestic and family violence, empowering them and providing pathways toward economic independence.

We will also be supporting the Dress for Success charity. Dress for Success Adelaide’s mission is to empower women to achieve financial independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and tools to help women thrive in work and life.

Below is a list of items they are needing. We would love it if could do a spring clean and bring along items to donate. If not you can still support this fabulous organisation with a financial donation which will help them purchase new essential items such as shoes and underwear and ensure the continuation of their service.
