Agenda

Progress towards an inclusive education for children and young people with disability in Australia
Stephanie Gotlib, CEO Children and Young People with Disability Australia

This presentation will focus upon variable experiences of children and young people with disabilities across Australian education jurisdictions. There have been numerous inquiries into and reviews of education for students with disabilities in the past decade and it is clear that children and young people with disabilities continue to experience exclusion on a daily basis. In the meantime, education jurisdictions attempt to describe their practices and cultures as inclusive. This discussion will address the inherent ableism in the structures and cultures of Australian education and suggest an agenda for reform.

How much more can advocacy achieve in our quest for inclusive education?
Julie Phillips, Disability Advocacy Victoria

In the last five years there have been more inquiries, reviews and research reports focusing on the rights of students with disabilities to be included equally in education, than ever before. Recent case studies indicate just how far we have to go in not only the inclusion of students with disabilities, but the understanding by teachers, principals and departments of education as to what inclusion actually means. How much more can advocacy achieve in our quest for inclusive education?

The Students Perspective of Education in Victoria
Leah van Poppel, Youth Disability Advocacy Service
