Event description
KCSP is providing Advanced Training in Suicide Prevention, developed and owned by the Black Dog Institute. Mental Health CPD, 6 CPD points.

About this Event

Kempsey Community Suicide Prevention is providing 2 ATSP workshops in Kempsey for local professionals. These workshops will be provided free of cost with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea included as part of the KCSP Action Plan 2020-21 Workforce development and Training Strategy - with the expectation that attendees will actively utilise these skills to improve suicide prevention, care and treatment in our local community.

What is ATSP?

It is a multidisciplinary workshop which provides practical tools for managing suicide risk – covering presentations including acute suicidal crisis, care after a suicide attempt, and assisting families experiencing suicide bereavement.

Who Can Attend ATSP?

This training is open to General Practitioners (GP's), psychologists and other mental health and allied health professionals who work within the Macleay Valley. This workshop will enhance learning through sharing experiences and knowledge, as well as emphasising the importance of collaboration when caring for people at risk of suicide. ATSP does not provide training in any specific therapeutic modalities.

What Does ATSP Involve?

  • The program includes one 6 hr face to face interactive workshop
  • The training is delivered by a Black Dog Institute facilitator with current registration as a General Practitioner or Clinical Psychologist
  • There are predisposing and reinforcing activities to complete in addition to the workshop
  • There are 5 core topics covered in the training: suicide and stigma, the suicidal crisis, acute management, after the attempt, and bereaved by suicide

Is ATSP Effective?

The program has been evaluated in an Australian context. Evaluations demonstrated a significant increase in GP confidence and knowledge in recognising and managing suicide risk. Advanced Training in Suicide Prevention is the recommended program for GP capacity building under the Lifespan Framework.
