Event description

Description

Living well is a daily choice. Dying well takes planning.

The subject of consenting to medical treatment has been around for quite a long time. With the development of consent laws came the notion of autonomy and the power for you to consent to the treatment that you want. But the problem arises when you are unable to consent, for reasons of disability or impairment, such as when you are unable to communicate or cannot make those decisions for yourself, such as a loss of capacity. Who then is going to consent or not consent to those treatments being offered to you?

Many of us have an idea of what we may or may not want to happen if a catastrophic health event occurs – a car accident, a stroke – or progression of a terminal disease. In such circumstances you may no longer be able to communicate yourself or be competent to make informed decision regarding your own health care.

If this happened, how would you want decisions to be made for you about your health care, living arrangements and other personal matters? More importantly, who would you want making these decisions for you?

Come along to this information forum and find why Advance Care Planning is an important activity and how to complete your Advance Directive. The sessions are free and open to any person over 18 years old.
