Description

Background

These Workshops explain how the mind works in the background in relation to a scene, and how we see, interpret and use techniques in camera and in post-production to highlight those unique elements.

The workshops will delve into the psychology of photography and how we can create extraordinary images with strong visual impact. They will present concepts based around how the subconscious gets attracted to, and distracted by, different elements in a scene/subject.

For further information see Adrian’s Imagineering Photos website (www.infocentre.com.au/imagineering).

The SMART Photographer

Adrian will discuss the subconscious aspects in the context of the S.M A.R.T. Photographer (each element will involve an in-depth explanation and discussion at the workshops):

S. Subject - Story, Adjective, Characterization/Appeal/Connection/Interest/Beauty.

M. Mood - Emotion. How it affects the viewer.

A. Aesthetics - Artistic. Composition, lighting, motion, point of view et al.

R. Rarity/Essence - Difficulty/Wow factor - How often do you see this or in this way?

Technique – Camera techniques that bring out the above characteristics of the image to best effect. The processing should match the subject, mood and "story".

There is an addition that sums it all up. S. Story - The combination of all of the above - including movement, expression, direction, leading lines, light and shadow, the environment/surroundings - all create a story, an overall picture - a thousand words.

Workshop Outlines

Each session will be conducted by proposing the concept with images portraying the element, inviting discussion and questions generally, then probably breaking into small groups with a dodgy photo (or the one on the screen) to discuss it themselves and telling us their suggestions.

Workshop 3

  • More Mind Matters. Secrets to attracting, engaging and getting reactions from viewers.

  • Originality - Master or Pretender? The culmination of all this, for the rest of your life.

  • Putting it all together - Being your true self and being known for it.

  • Shotlists and Setting up Projects

  • How to deal with fame and fortune? A light look at what's next - your commitment.

Outcomes

The workshops will give participants enough information to start creating impressive photos, know their style and favourite genre, and be able to start their personal project right from day one. Participants will also learn how to critique images better than most.

About Adrian Lowe

Adrian has been involved with photography in one way or another at all levels for the past 50 years or so. In his early professional photography days, he owned two retail stores, a mini-lab and a studio, as well as many years as a wedding photographer. Later on, when he became a psychotherapist during the day and a philosophy tutor at night, the understanding of the connection between how and why the brain thinks and sees and interprets images became very clear. It was then that he developed the SMART approach, connecting the subconscious processes to the conscious awareness and techniques of imaging. In more recent times, and now in retirement, Adrian has become known as a photography judge, seminar convenor, tutor, speaker, exhibitor of photography projects and founder of the Masters Apprentices Photography Club.
