Adaptive Lighting for Heritage Architecture: A Contemporary Approach

Join Viabizzuno for a CPD-accredited webinar exploring how minimal contemporary lighting design can sensitively transform heritage environments into dynamic cultural spaces.

Using the Arcari Quarry project in the hills of Vicenza—the city of Andrea Palladio—as a key case study, we examine the adaptive reuse of a historic subterranean stone quarry into a performance venue designed by David Chipperfield. Formed through more than 300 years of excavation, the cavernous chambers—defined by monumental piers and raw white stone—were reimagined with flexible platforms, ramps, and steps to host concerts, lectures, theatre, and film.

Viabizzuno’s ambient and stage lighting demonstrates a restrained, contemporary approach to heritage illumination—enhancing materiality and atmosphere while preserving architectural integrity. Central to the project is the bespoke N55 Torchia, a rechargeable luminaire custom-designed for the site and suspended without fixed wiring, ensuring no penetration of the historic fabric. This reversible solution exemplifies how product innovation can arise directly from architectural context.

Through this case study, discover how adaptive, sustainable lighting strategies can support conservation, flexibility, and creative expression in heritage architecture—through sensitivity, precision, and a restrained contemporary language.
