8.30am - 9:45am What’s new with cracked teeth? Alex Moule
This presentation will discuss recent thoughts on the development of cracks in teeth and demonstrate that many of these teeth can be treated conservatively with excellent long-term prognosis, despite being extensively cracked.
9:45am -10:30am Examination of the Edentulous Mouth. Gary Smith
Gary outlines the steps involved in undertaking an examination of the edentulous patient, using his complete denture examination chart to determine appropriate denture treatment options
The intended learning outcomes are to:
- Describe the steps involved in undertaking an examination of the edentulous patient, using Gary’s complete denture examination chart to determine appropriate denture- treatment options.
- Identify some of the common issues and potential pitfalls that dentists need to be aware of when treating an edentulous patient.
10.30am - 11.00am: Morning Tea
11:00 am -12:15pm Rotational Partial Dentures. Gary Smith
Gary discusses the practicalities of using survey tools and surveyor instruments in the making of dentures. The initial design of dentures is the start of the process and forms the foundation of a good aesthetic and retention outcomes for the patient. Using case studies, Dr Gary Smith outlines what to do at the design stage to achieve a good result.
The intended learning outcomes are to:
- Explain the various surveyor tools and their use
- Explain how to correctly use a surveyor
- Explain denture design objectives
- Explain the concepts, Path of Insertion, Path of Removal and Path of Displacement
- Develop the idea of simple tooth bound saddle formulae
- Reveal the benefits of the various Rotational Path of Insertion dentures including
- Antero-posterior Rotational Dentures
- Postero-anterior Rotational Dentures and
- Lateral Rotational Dentures

Hon. Prof. Alex Moule
Alex Moule is a specialist endodontist with nearly 30 years’ experience in full-time endodontic practice. He has taught dentistry in many universities worldwide and is currently an Honorary Professor at the School of Dentistry, University of Queensland. He was the founder and program coordinator of the endodontic graduate program. Although he is supposed to be retired, he continues to supervise graduate students at the Oral Health Center in Brisbane and works a day a week treating endodontic patients at the Wooloongabba Health Centre in Wooloongabba. From 2012 to 2016 he was an Associate Professor at Kuwait University. He is a Past President of the International Association of Dental Traumatology and was the co-chair of the 2016 World Congress on Dental Traumatology.
Alex is a past president of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists and has been a member of the Australian Society of Endodontology for over 45years. He serves on several editorial boards and scientific review committees and is a member of the FRACDS Board of studies for Endodontics. He has supervised numerous research theses and has published seventeen book chapters and over 65 peer reviewed publications, as well as editing two books on the diagnosis of orofacial pain, the latest, Diagnosing Dental and Orofacial Pain – a Clinical Manual was published by Wiley Blackwell in 2017.
His standing in the dental community has been recognized by the award of several International Fellowships, including the International College of Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry International, the Pierre Fauchard Society and the International Association of Dental Traumatology.
His special fields of interest are pain diagnosis, dental traumatology, and endodontic diagnosis. Alex is married is to Judy-Ann and has two sons, Christopher and Richard, both dentists, and a daughter, Elizabeth, who is a geologist.
Dr Gary Smith
Gary Smith graduated B.D.Sc. (Hons) from UQ in 1979. He opened the prosthodontic practice in 1988 following the completion of his post-graduate studies at UQ in the field of removable prosthodontics. He specialises in the fabrication of complete dentures with a particular interest in the Mandibular Suction Denture Technique of Prof Jiro Abe. In conjunction with other specialist practitioners, he fabricates immediate dentures and implant retained appliances. He also fabricates labial veneer dentures and partial dentures, often using the rotational path design approach.
Gary is committed to the profession of dentistry and has served on various committees of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Dental Association (ADAQ). He is currently chairman of the Dental History Preservation Committee and is helping to organise a Dental Museum for ADAQ. He was elected to the council of ADAQ in 2008 and was the 2017 President.
For many years he held a part-time appointment at the University of Queensland Dental School as the Senior Lecturer in Removable Prosthodontics. Currently Gary supervises and lectures the prosthodontic post -graduate students at UQ.
He was the Secretary of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Prosthodontic Society in 2009 – 10 and again in 2013 – 14, 2019, and the Federal Secretary of the Australian Prosthodontic Society in 2011 - 12. He is the current President of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Prosthodontic Society. Gary is also a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
Gary has lectured extensively throughout Australia on the topics of occlusion, removable prosthodontics and implant retained dentures.
