Event description

Description

In 1803, convict William Buckley fled an embryonic settlement in the land of the Kulin nation to take his chances in the wilderness. Local Aboriginal people found the six-foot-five former soldier, cold and starving, and took him in to live with them as a Wadawurrung man. Colonists discovered Buckley in 1835 just as former bounty hunter John Batman arrived in the area, seeking to acquire the rolling grasslands around the bay. What happened next saw the Wadawurrung betrayed and Buckley broken, with the theft of Kulin country ending in the birth of Melbourne.

Adam Courtenay is a highly accomplished Sydney-based journalist and author.
