Description

The Australia-China Youth Association (ACYA), following on from its successful Australia-China Emerging Leaders' Summit in July, welcomes the celebrated author, Wu Ming-yi, to discuss his new book, The Stolen Bicycle, and to hear his thoughts on contemporary literature in Taiwan. Award-winning novelist Wu Ming-Yi is also an artist, designer, photographer, literary professor, butterfly scholar, environmental activist, traveller and blogger, and is widely considered the leading writer of his generation in his native Taiwan.

The Stolen Bicycle

'Twenty years ago, when my father went missing, it occurred to us that we might be able to find him by locating his bicycle. Only then did we discover that his bicycle was gone, too, that Father and his iron steed had left us together.'

A writer embarks on an epic quest in search of his missing father’s stolen bicycle and soon finds himself ensnared in the strangely intertwined stories of Lin Wang, the oldest elephant who ever lived, the soldiers who fought in the jungles of South-East Asia during World War II, and the secret world of butterfly handicraft makers in Taiwan. The result is both a majestic historical novel and a profound, startlingly intimate meditation on memory, family and home.

This event is kindly supported by the University of Sydney China Studies Centre.

There will be a door prize, thanks to Text Publishing, and attendees will be in the draw to win a signed copy of The Stolen Bicycle.
