Description

GENDER EQUALITY AND PRIVILEGE IN MUSIC
With Cat Hope, Professor of Music and Head of school, Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University

Held in conjunction with The Summers Night Project, established to support and mentor emerging composers who identify as women, this seminar focuses on gender equality in recent Australian music culture.

Cat Hope (Professor of Music and Head of school, Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University) will examine the current standing of female composers and musicians in the Australian music industry.

Cat is a composer, ensemble director, performer, researcher and advocate for women in music.

Gender is a hot topic in Australia right now. #metoo, #MeNoMore, domestic violence, the gender pay gap, equal participation, the housing market and even the US elections have brought about considerable debate, where the impact on women is highlighted. This presentation looks at women in the music industry through the lens of this environment - how they fare as composers, musicians and in music leadership roles in Australia.

Cat will look at the current culture around women in the music industry, their contribution, the challenges they face, and ways forward to empowering more women to forge careers within the industry.

WHEN: Wednesday 4 July, 4:00pm until 5:00pm.

WHERE: Elder Hall, University of Adelaide, North Tce, Adelaide

COST: FREE but registration is essential.
