Accounting as Performance

Monash Business School’s innovative Artist in Residence program is an initiative which aims to explore the art of business and the business of art.

For one night only, Monash Business School is proud to host ‘Accounting as Performance’, an artistic investigation exploring the inner life of accountants, their work routines and daily rituals, featuring internationally-renowned Danish visual artist Mette Riise.

Established in 2018 by the Department of Accounting, the Artist in Residence program invites leading international conceptual artists to work with researchers and students, to break down the traditional thinking of the accounting field, provoke radical conversations and trigger new insights.

Last year’s artist-in-residence was Bek Conroy, whose charming interactive video installation ‘Dating an accountant - how do you measure love?’ delighted audiences and culminated in the premiere of a short film.

This year, Danish conceptual artist Mette Riise will explore the often uncomfortable relationship between art and the corporate world, where profit, diminishing digital attention spans and concepts such as ‘personal branding’ sit uneasily with artistic creativity and freedom.

Through playful investigations – such as ‘corporate’ videos on ‘How to Build an Artist Brand’ – the Austrian-based artist takes the role of an anthropologist to immerse herself in different industries and fields of investigation, uncovering human behaviours, phenomena and social critique.

She starts to question the role of the contemporary artist – does art really have the potential to activate social change? Or are we just entertaining ourselves while we are here?
