Area of Interest: Skills and knowledge

This seminar is aimed at providing lawyers the essential knowledge and skills to undertake financial analysis, including how to read and interpret financial statements, balance sheets and identify profits as well as losses.

Participants receive a text book by Prof Bob Deutsch’s Accounting for Non-Accountants A Question and Answer Handbook By Robert Deutsch and Kris Chikarovski.

Topic 1: The basics of accounting: The key matters everyone needs to understand before reading financial statements – the accounting standards

  • Identifying the key standards and interpretations

Topic 2: The balance sheet

  • Assets

Topic 3: The profit and loss account

  • Types of profit- gross/operating/net/EBIT/EBITDA
  • Revenue items
  • Expense items

Topic 4: Financial ratio analysis/financial covenants analysis

  • Understanding liquidity, Insolvency and Ten Profitability Ratios
  • Lenders use of Financial Covernant Ratios

Topic 5: Manipulating accounts

  • Spotting earning manipulation
  • Examination of expenses and liabilities

Professor Robert Deutsch, Senior Tax Counsel / Head of Education Tax Institute
Prof. Bob Deutsch is a former head of school at ATAX, and formerly a Director at KPMG. He has written and taught extensively about concepts of Taxation and revenue regulation.
