The need to greatly expand society’s capacity to address complex sustainable development challenges has never been more important or more urgent, with just ten years remaining to the 2030 deadline of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the growing urgency of addressing climate change, and now the significant setbacks across the SDGs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can have a critical role in helping build this capacity by ensuring all their students acquire the knowledge, skills and mindsets to address the SDGs through whichever profession they choose.

Through a combination of webinar-style and interactive-workshop sessions, this workshop aims to help build momentum for mainstreaming education for the SDGs across HEIs in our region, by:

  • Sharing inspiring initiatives HEIs in our region are taking to accelerate education for the SDGs across the whole institution or across a whole faculty.
  • Working together to identify potential approaches to further accelerating action, through discussion on priorities, gaps, barriers, and opportunities to enable action.

We invite anyone with an interest in education for the SDGs in higher education in the Australia, New Zealand & Pacific region to join us for this workshop. Details of the program and online joining links will be shared in early February 2021.

We welcome proposals from ACTS, PRME AusNZ or SDSN AusNZPac member institutions to present on their initiatives to accelerate education for the SDGs across the whole institution or across a whole faculty. Please send a short overview to Tahl Kestin ( by 15 January 2021.

The workshop is being jointly hosted by the Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS), the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) AusNZ Chapter, and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) AusNZPac Regional Network, with the assistance of an Expert Advisory Group from our member institutions.

The workshop is part of the ACTS/SDSN AusNZPac Accelerating SDG Practice Initiative, which aims to support our member organisations to strengthen their internal engagement with the SDGs, and the global SDSN Dialogue Series on the new guide on Accelerating Education for the SDGs in Universities. This workshop also supports the UN PRME global movement for education to develop the responsible decision-makers of tomorrow to advance sustainable development and contributes to the AusNZ PRME Community of Practice.
