Event description

Description

When undertaking research in politically-charged areas, such as climate change, refugee policy or housing inequality, how can you best contribute your knowledge to public debate?

  • How do you get your views across in a measured yet interesting way?

  • How do you steer the conversation to help inform the media and the general public?

  • How do you convey the intricacies of years of research in short media grabs?

  • How do you avoid being (perceived as) political?

In this seminar, three of our Grand Challenge leads will share their experiences of engaging with the media. They will be joined by journalist, Ben Doherty from The Guardian, who will provide his perspective on why and when the media seeks academic opinion, how academics can get their research into the media, and ‘dos and don’ts’ for media impact.

Program

  • 4pm - Panel and Q&A

  • 5.15pm - 5.30pm - Refreshments and time to connect with others

Speakers

Ben Doherty, The Guardian

About the Grand Challenge Meetups

The Grand Challenge Meetups are for the UNSW community who are interested in the Grand Challenges Program and want to join the conversation.

Meetups will occur fortnightly and will feature different speakers and topics that are related to current and future Grand Challenges. Once the presentations conclude, there will be a chance to connect with colleagues and plant the seeds for future collaborations.
