Outline of this seminar:

This session will focus on three key areas where businesses can utilise Federal Government programs to boost their business cashflow. The three key topics are:

  • The R&D Tax Incentive program – Aimed at providing indirect government support through a company’s annual tax return, this is an entitlement-based (rather than competitive) program targeted towards companies undertaking development of new or improved products, services, technologies, devices etc. Whilst there are different rates of support depending on a company’s turnover, support is available for businesses of all sizes. The highest rate of support is for pre-revenue start-up businesses, where up to 43.5% cash refunds can be obtained for every 1 dollar of R&D spend.

  • The Accelerated Commercialisation program – Whilst there are a number of Federal based grants, the focus of this session will be on the Accelerated Commercialisation grant. The grant is aimed at providing direct government support and takes the form of a competitive process for a limited pool of grant funding. Each individual company can apply for up to $1m matched funding for commercialisation support activities and grant funding is offered through a merit based process. This program is generally targeted towards businesses which require funding to commercialise novel products, processes or services.

  • The Early Stage Innovation Company Incentive – Aimed at assisting companies with obtaining funding at the investor level (for early stage innovative companies), through generous benefits for investors which invest in ESIC businesses. Broadly, once a business satisfies ESIC status and investors meet certain criteria, investors are able to obtain a 20% tax offset for amounts invested, and the shares will be exempt from Capital Gains Tax if disposed of between 12 months and 10 years.
