Event description

Description

In the lead up to Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June ) we play two films that celebrate Aboriginal Heritage in film. Short film, BabaKiueria (BBQ Area), revolves around a role-reversal, whereby it is Aboriginal Australians who invade and colonise the fictitious country of Babakiueria, a land that has long been inhabited by white natives, the Babakiuerians. Made in 1986, it is a film that presents a “walk in my shoes” perspective for white Australia.

Our feature film is Black Panther Woman. A revealing history of one woman’s participation in the Australian Black Panther Party. Marlene Cummings tells her story, and we follow her as she travels to New York 40 years later to meet with members from the Black Panther Party. This is a widely unknown part of Australia’s Aboriginal history, and celebrates the determination of this community in finding a voice in their fight for equality.

This film night is Rated M (Ages 15+ recommended).
