Indonesia and Australia have a high level Strategic Partnership Agreement and in July 2020 formalised the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA). Strengthening Education and Skills Training partnerships are important features of the agreement.
Recognising the strong ties and deep connections between Indonesia and Australia, the AAED December country focus webinar will explore the Indonesia-Australia relationships from an education and training sector perspective.
This session will focus on:
- Update on Indonesia’s education sector response to COVID-19
- Opportunities in Indonesia-Australia international education cooperation including in online learning, research partnerships, split masters programs and skills training
- Lessons learnt from Australia’s education engagement with Indonesia
- Challenges and opportunities for the education and training sector under the Indonesia- Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA)
- Building TVET System Capacity and industry linkages in and with Indonesia
- The future of Australian linked Transnational Education (TNE) across Indonesia
MODERATOR:
Mr. John Ross
John is an award-winning journalist who has joined Times Higher Education as Asia-Pacific editor in February 2018. He was previously higher education and science correspondent with The Australian newspaper. He has twice won the National Press Club’s Higher Education Journalist of the Year award, most recently in 2018, and has been shortlisted five times. John holds a communications degree from what is now the University of Technology Sydney.
PANEL SPEAKERS:
1. Mr Alastair Dawson
Mr Dawson is the Vice-President, Global Development at CQUniversity Australia. He brings to the university sector extensive experience in leading organisations in reform and transformation, having had more than 20 years in leading major departments and organisations outside of the university sector and across Australia.
His experience includes leading the business development and marketing functions, as well as the capital development roles in complex community linked organisations. His experience includes more than 10 years in senior roles within some of the largest councils and water utilities in Australia including Albert Shire, Logan City and Brisbane City Council, as well as executive roles in Brisbane Water and Coliban Water in Victoria. He is a business turnaround and execution specialist, having successfully rebuilt numerous business across the country in both the public and private sectors.
He was the Chief Executive Officer for the Victorian Farmers' Federation, arguable the largest Farm Advocacy Organisation in Australia, followed by terms as Chief Executive Officer at Beaudesert Shire Council and Rockhampton Regional Council before taking on the Vice-President and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Services) role at CQUniversity. He has extensive experience as a board member on various for profit and not for profit boards in Australia and overseas. Mr Dawson is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and Leadership, and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
2. Mr Michael Fay
Michael Fay is Convenor of the ASEAN-Australia Education Dialogue (AAED) and a Director at the Australian Corporate Advisory firm - ASEAN Focus Group (AFG VG). Michael is based in Sydney and advises a range of international education institutions, associations, media groups and peak bodies in relation to Asian education activities.
He has a regional specialisation on India, Indonesia and the ASEAN region and was on the National Board of the Australia Indonesia Business Council (AIBC) from 2015-19. He has also been a board member of the National ELT Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) and is a Gold Friend of the Duke of Edinburgh Award/The International Award for Young People.
Michael is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Technology Sydney in recognition of his pioneering work in establishing UTS Insearch, developing IELTS Testing at UTS, an IELTS publishing business at Insearch and setting up transnational education centres in Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand.
