2D image aquisition has been in your hip pocket for a number of years now. We take a smart phone cameras for granted.
3D content creation until recently has required painstaking effort with the need of creating of fine detailed models and textures using skills developed over years of training to make detailed photorealistic models. Only acheivable after years of practise for a select few with the talent and dedication.
Now through the use of photogrammetry we can combine the ease of use of a smartphone camera to create detailed 3D models, complete with photorealistic textures.
In the past this has required expensive specialised equipment such as lasers built into special purpose scanning equipment, and while this will produce professional results.
At an enthusiast and hobby level photogrammetry can be achieved using a low budget or no budget setup.
This 6 hour workshop run by Sam Hodge will cover installation of OpenSource and Demonstration software:
- Visual Structure from Motion (SIFT, RANSAC, CVMS/PVMS)
- PhotoScan and Reality Capture
- Aquistion of photographs of an object, including lighting
- Processing of the images to form a camera array and point cloud in Visual SFM
- Processing of the point cloud in MeshLab to form a textured mesh
- Clean up of the texture in GIMP
- Uploading the mesh to SketchFab to share with users, to allow them to print, download
Attendees will need to bring their smart phone and should have a basic knowledge of computer usage and digital photography.
Experience with moving a camera around a 3D data set would be of an advantage - but is not necessary.
