About this Event

Brian Samuels will lead a walking tour to view sites related to some of the Society’s notable heritage battles and promotional initiatives and outline their stories.

The walk will start from the fountain in front of Romeo's Foodland in the Port Mall Shopping Centre , Marryatt street, Port Adelaide.

We will start at 6.30pm sharp and we will walk for approximately 45 minutes prior to visiting the south Australian Maritime Museum.

Topics covered will include the attempt to save the former Ozone Cinema in St Vincent St (1913: the first purpose-built cinema of the Ozone chain); saving the then ANZ bank (1859) in Lipson St from demolition; the lobbying for the conservation of the Port’s heritage buildings that culminated in the declaration of South Australia’s first State Heritage Area in 1982; and the successful campaign to better preserve the Port’s maritime heritage, which ultimately led to the creation of the SA Maritime Museum, opened in 1986. The Society’s long-term lobbying made a considerable contribution to its establishment. Fittingly the walk will end at the South Australian Maritime Museum, where two new displays will be open for viewing and our usual end of meeting refreshments will be provided.

As with all the Society’s meetings, non-members are welcome.
