A Night with the Pacific Climate Warriors - Canberra
Event Information
Description
This October, 30 Pacific Climate Warriors will journey to Australia.
They bring with them an important message: 'the Australian fossil fuel industry, with the support of our governments and big lenders, are planning to build gigantic new coal mines that would double Australia’s coal exports. This fuels climate change, it fuels the destruction of Pacific.'
The Warriors are here to fight peacefully for their future.
This free event will be part story-telling, part performance and a call to action. Spaces will go fast - book today.
This event is brought to you as a collaboration between 350.org, ANU Pasifika and the Micronesian & Australian Friends Association.
The Warriors:
Isso Nihmei - Vanuatu
24 year old Isso Nihmei is 350.org’s Vanuatu Coordinator. He has spent the past two years strengthening and building youth capacity in Vanuatu, working in partnership with Government and civil society. Isso also works with the German Development Agency on a climate change adaptation project which aims to strengthen the capacities of Pacific countries and regional organizations to cope with the impacts of climate change. Among the areas he focuses on are climate change and agriculture, including new farming techniques, connections with government, and interaction with national and regional climate change initiatives.
Viemwa Boraoi - Kiribati
22 year old Viemwa Boraoi was born and raised in Kiribati - an atoll island at the frontlines of climate change. In her lifetime, she has seen the increase in sea level rise and experienced the varying weather patterns. Like many young people in Kiribati, Viemwa believes that she can do something about the realities of climate change in her Islands. Part of that is volunteering with 350 Kiribati. Apart from doing something about climate change, she believes in service to her people and helping the less fortunate in her country. Her hopes for bringing about change with volunteerism is further solidified with her involvement with the Youth Group of Jehovahs Witness in Kiribati.
