If you'd like to know a little more about why we're raising funds you'll find some information below.

The Challenge

You already know we've reached a tipping point in terms of mass extinction of species. At current rates major umbrella species such as lions and elephants will be extinct in the wild by 2020.

The Causes

Desertification: for a burgeoning human population and its insatiable appetite for wealth and food. Natural habitats are being cleared for:

• development for housing, both formal and informal

• agriculture and live stocking

• fuel in the form of firewood and charcoal

• mining

Food: Quite simply, Africa’s animals are being poached because of government’s failure to provide a stable state and food supply.

High-value commodities: such as rhino horn and ivory, which both happen to be worth more than gold or cocaine.

Paper parks: meaning many of Africa's parks and reserves are simply that on paper. They are underfunded to the tune of 97% in some countries and desperately need the support of outsiders.

Diwa Zambezi Vision

We might be an Australian charity, but we’ve grown up with African animals all around us: elephants on pyjamas, lions as school mascots, and all of them together on our TV screens during wildlife documentaries. As a registered environmental organisation and deductible gift recipient, Diwa Zambezi’s principal charitable object is the acquisition or leasehold of a wilderness area in Southern Africa, which will eventually be operated as a non-profit wildlife tourism venture. Simply speaking, the more land owned for this purpose, the less we’ll eventually lose to the chief causes outlined above.
