Event description

Description

This is the story of Collet Barker, the man after whom Mount Barker Summit and the town that sprang up in its shadow, was named.

Captain Collet Barker was an officer of the 39th Regiment in Australia and spent time in Northern Australia, Western Australia and South Australia. He developed an enlightened relationship with the Aboriginal people he engaged with, yet tragically he died at the mouth of the Murray in April 1831 after being speared by three Ngarrindjerri men in reprisal to crimes committed against Aboriginal people by Kangaroo Island sealers.

It was Captain Charles Sturt who named the hill he had previously assumed to be Mount Lofty, Mount Barker - in honor of his friend.

Join us for an interesting and entertaining evening as Bob Innes discusses his research into Collet Barker, presents a slide show and tells a tale or two in song!
