Event Details

ANZAPPL (Victoria) and the APS College of Forensic Psychologists (Victoria) invite all to a Twilight Soiree honouring the work of Dr Patricia Brown, who retired in March 2018.

 Dr Brown will present on

A life's work in Victoria's Children's Court Clinic: The historical development of the Clinic in the forensic field and the politics of protection impacting on the Court Clinic and now on child law.

Dr Patricia Brown, PhD, Clinical and Forensic Psychologist, is a Fellow of the APS, is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Swinburne and until quite recently she was the Senior Technical Specialist and Director of the Children's Court Clinic of Victoria.

Dr Brown has been a clinician, expert witness, teacher of many and researcher in her field. She has taught Child Forensic Psychology at a number of universities in Victoria, and she has given many papers nationally and internationally. Her papers and publications have often addressed the role and practice of psychologists in the courts.

Dr Brown has been a pioneer in the field in a number of ways. She pioneered the modern era of the Children's Court Clinic, being the first psychologist to be put in charge of a Government Clinic in Victoria; She was the national Chairman of the Board (now College) of Forensic Psychologists of the APS in its inaugural year, and was influential in promoting the teaching of Forensic Psychology in Australian universities.

Dr Brown’s advocacy for change to the ethos of protection became legend: her concerns about the cutting of the power of the Children's Court to ensure matters like access for a child with a loved parent are well known. Dr Brown herself believes it was one of life's mysteries that she was never dismissed from Public Service, given her ongoing advocacy.
