Festival Q&A

What is the Festival of 50 years?

2018 marks the 50th birthday celebrations of our forerunner institution the Canberra College of Advanced Education and we want the whole community to join us in the celebrations. We are holding a Festival of 50 Years that will include live music, lots of great food from Canberra’s favourite food trucks, drinks , kids entertainment, stalls, tours and exhibitions to keep you entertained and out of the house for a Sunday afternoon.

When is the Festival?

The Festival will be held on Sunday 28 October 2018, 12pm – 3pm

Where will the Festival be held?

The Festival will be held on the University of Canberra concourse (which is the area in the middle of the campus). Please see the campus map for reference.

What time does the event kick-off?

The event will be held from 12pm – 3pm. Just enough time to have some great food and to wear the kids out for the afternoon!

What is happening at the Festival?

The Festival will have food, drinks (including beer, wine and coffee) for sale as well as great live music from Jack Billman, stallholders, jumping castles, a petting zoo and a couple of rides for our younger guests. There will also be a self-guided heritage trail that will be set up on campus highlighting UC's history. The trail will include several exhibitions set up by our cultural heritage students. Guided campus tours will also be conducted throughout the day by our Student Ambassadors.

Who can attend the Festival?

Anybody and everybody! While we hope to see many UC students, staff and alumni, we also welcome those in the Canberra community who are looking for a great afternoon out.

Are there free events?

The food and drinks will be for sale, however you can enjoy some free live music, while the littlest members of the family enjoy the free Petting Paddock , jumping castle and rides. There will also be a free laser tag zone for the teens and young at heart adults.

Will there be activities for children?

Yes! Noah’s Ark Petting Paddock will be in attendance, as well as a couple of carnival rides. The kids can have their faces painted or get roudy in the laser tag zone. There will also be plenty of yummy food that will make the kiddies super happy!

What food will be available?

What a variety! We will have food available for every taste. We have secured the below food vendors to offer a great range on the day:

  • Fricken Chicken
  • Wandering Wood Fired Oven
  • Mr Papa
  • Le Petit Breton
  • Soul Cartel
  • Nellie’s Bar & Café
  • Raijin Japanese Cuisine
  • Delikase Filipino Restaurant
  • Naked Press Juice Co.
  • Brain Freeze Mobile Slushies
  • Cracking Corn
  • What the Pho
  • Sweet Temptations

Can I bring my pet?

Due to food and small children being involved, we cannot allow your four-legged friends at the festival. Assistance animals are welcome.

Will there be an ATM available?

Many of the vendors attending will require cash for payment (although some will have EFTPOS facilities). We do have a Westpac ATM available outside Building 1 and a Commonwealth Bank ATM on the lower level of the concourse but to avoid lines we recommend you bring some cash.

Will alcohol be served?

Yes. We will have Nellie’s Bar & Café and UC’s very own UCU serving something for those who are looking for something a little heavier than soft drink and water. Please ensure you bring your ID along if you intend on purchasing any alcohol. UC encourages responsible drinking and will have security onsite to ensure we are all on our best behaviour in this regard.

Where is the best place to park?

UC has many carparks available around campus, which will be free during the Festival. Please visit the parking map on the UC website for a map of the car park locations.

The best option for disability parking is behind Building 9.

What if it’s raining?

While we have put the order in for a beautiful sunny Canberra day, it is not guaranteed. In the event of bad weather, we will put an update on our event page as to what will still be going ahead and what activities will be cancelled.

Can I bring my own food and drinks?

Of course! We will have some amazing live music on the stage in the concourse. You are welcome to bring a picnic and sit in the shade on the grass. We will also have limited picnic blankets and beanbags available to keep you comfortable.

Will water be available?

The UC campus is plastic water bottle free –therefore, while our vendors will be selling soft drink, they are discouraged from selling water and our guests encouraged to bring re-usable drink bottles.

UC has a number of water refilling stations around the campus. Icon water have also been kind enough to donate a limited number of reusable drink bottles that we will give away to those who need them.

What if I have further questions?

Then get in touch! Contact our UC Alumni Team at alumni@canberra.edu.au or on 6206 3959 if you have any Festival related questions.

We can’t wait to see you there!
