CHAMPION (Community Hub and Meeting Place in Our Neighbourhood) is a community service established by the Temple Society Australia (TSA). It offers emergency food relief and a host of practical assistance and advisory services to help people get back on their feet.

The Foodbank - Foodbanks are a critical resource for people to be able to feed themselves and their families. According to Foodbank Victoria, "around 11,000 Victorians seek food relief each month and are unable to be assisted - 38% are children. Of those assisted, 67% do not receive all they require. Hunger is a serious problem and, in spite of modern prosperity, it is getting more serious. In 2013, there was a 12% increase in the number of people seeking food relief.”

CHAMPION’s Food Bank pantry relies solely on donations from the public and local businesses. CHAMPION is currently only open for 5 hours a week but sees 160-200 people a month, with an average of 30 new faces through their doors each month. They go through a pallet load of pantry food each month from Foodbank Victoria as well as 16 boxes of fruit and vegetable and 5 large bags of bread every Wednesday. On a weekly basis they go to 140 litres of milk.

Two local agencies have recently closed doors and with CHAMPION becoming the replacement referral point for their clients, numbers have therefore increased significantly.

Advice and Advisory Services - CHAMPION has an experienced Community Care Worker onsite offering a range of practical assistance including budgeting advice and referral to local services. There is a computer with internet access available to search for job opportunities and to access information that may assist patrons. They are also always there for a cup of tea and a friendly chat.
