This workshop is exclusively designed for students in year 9 to 12 to experience what it’s like to be a tradie in a number of field’s with these hands on experiences. With access to Box Hill Institute’s trades facilities, students will get to jump into the action and get a real taste of life as a tradie in the electrical, automotive or plumbing field.


In the electrical workshop, participants will learn how to build a basic electric motor. The automotive workshop will allow students to learn how electrical wiring works for your car indicators and headlights. Finally, in the plumbing workshop students will build a galvanised metal toolbox and learn some plumbing techniques used by plumbers on the job.


A presentation is included that will give participants an excellent insight into life as a tradie and how to go about securing an apprenticeship.

Content:


Students will have the opportunity to choose two out of the following three workshops to take part in:

1: Electrical: learn how to wire-up a light switch or power point.

2: Automotive: Have a high-voltage experience with electric currents. Learn how electrical wiring works for your car indicators and headlights.

3: Plumbing: Build a galvanised metal tool box and learn the techniques used in roof-plumbing and mechanical services.

After lunch, participants will attend a presentation on the Trade courses we have available and student life at Box Hill Institute. The presentation will also include discussion on what it is like working in different trades and the expectations of employers.
