Description

Meeting with Jacopo Tomatis

The Italian Cultural Institute of Sydney is pleased to host Italian musician, musicologist and music journalist Jacopo Tomatis. On this occasion, Tomatis will present his latest work entitled Storia culturale della canzone italiana (A Cultural History of Italian Song), a monography published by Il Saggiatore in 2019. The book is the result a research started over 10 years ago.

In Storia culturale della canzone italiana Tomatis presents the Italian song and its history through a new perspective starting from a relevant, but equally difficult, question: what makes a song an ‘Italian song’?

During the meeting the author will embark on an exciting journey through the history of Italian folk song, starting from Fascism up to the last decades of the 20th century. Tomatis will retrace the history of music genres and popular music in Italy by analysing the most common ideas about Italian songs and presenting a new vision of its history. Indeed, according to Tomatis telling the story of a song does not only mean telling the story of Italian music, but also the story of the culture of the Belpaese: any song, even if commercial, is never an end in itself, but represents an important cornerstone in the historical, artistic and cultural mosaic of Italy. History and music influence each other. After all, as Tomatis says: «Talking about music doesn’t mean talking only about music».

Jacopo Tomatis (1984) is an Italian musicologist, music journalist and musician. Born in the province of Cuneo, Tomatis studied at the University of Turin, where he received a PhD in Entertainment and Music in 2016. He has written many articles for magazines and websites, published in Italian, English and French. He published his first book, Storia culturale della canzone italiana italiana (A Cultural History of Italian Song) (edited by Il Saggiatore) at the beginning of 2019. He collaborates as music journalist with various newspapers, both on paper and online. He is the editor of Italian music magazine Il giornale della musica. Tomatis directs the Premio Nazionale Città di Loano per la Musica Tradizionale Italiana, the most important Italian folk music award.
