Description

The 9th National Paediatric Bioethics Conference

“ Patient and family-centred care”. This is an admirable sentiment, but is it any more than that? As an overall ethos it is hard to disagree with, but it is not always clear what it means in practice. Families are complicated at the best of times. Sometimes they can start to fray around the seams when a child is sick. Should we always be guided by the expressed needs and preferences of families, or the child? And what if they are different?

This conference will explore whether the idea of patient and family-centred care provides meaningful guidance in ethically complex and challenging health care situations.

Plenary sessions at the conference will focus in-depth on a number of specific topics, including:

  • Medical neglect or just a different parenting style?

- The appropriate roles of Child Protection and foster care

  • Parent-driven treatment which may be detrimental to a child
  • Professional relationships and boundaries – how close is too close? What is ethically appropriate practice in relation to attending funerals, birthday parties and other family events?

- Being available to families out of hours – how far must staff go to meet families’ needs?

  • Families’ experiences of patient and family centred care

The National Paediatric Bioethics Conference, held annually at the RCH, provides time to reflect on the big picture, and opportunities to think things through in depth and to hear different perspectives on challenging and troubling issues. It brings to together paediatric and adolescent health practitioners of all disciplines, ethicists, policy makers and community sector practitioners. It is a collaborative, exploratory and supportive event for sharing experiences and ways of thinking, and developing insights and new ways forward.

The conference offers a mix of invited speakers and submitted papers, with plenary and break-out sessions.
