Event description
The Theme for Paint the Town REaD's 8th National Early Literacy Conference is: Enhancing Early Literacy by Embracing Cultural Diversity.

About this Event

This Conference will bring to you latest research and practical applications for early literacy through the lens of cultural diversity. There will also be a focus on engaging men and boys in reading with bubs from birth and community ownership and partnerships in early literacy.

Come and join us —in person or online for our first hybrid* Conference! Whether you’re from the city or the country, work in early childhood, library, child and family services, volunteer in a service club, or you’re a strategic planner in your government position. Or if you want to start painting your community REaD, or strengthen your existing PTTR site.

We will have keynote speakers and workshops for all of you!

*Our Hybrid Conference

Delegates can register to attend either face to face at the Conference Venue in Bankstown NSW, or online.

It includes a late lunch, and given what you will enjoy on the trail, you probably won’t need dinner either!

We will make sure you are back in plenty of time from the Pre-Conference Symposium to make it for the Tour.

CONFERENCE DAY ONE: THURS 20th May 9.00am – 5.15 pm

Keynote Speakers (More information on all speakers is available here).

Jennie Cusiter – A Strong First Language is a Strong Language Learner This keynote will address the critical pre-literacy period, a journey which spans the first 2000 days of a child’s life, and provide an overview of the current research on promoting language and pre-literacy learning in diverse cultural contexts.

Rachelle Coe and Rosemary Signorelli - Creating culturally responsive opportunities to address the effects of trauma on early development for children and families with refugee experiences This keynote address will discuss the impacts of trauma on the brain, and inform understanding of the family’s culture and trauma, support for home language use, and the teaching of skills to enhance parent child interactions within the family through play. These can all positively impact the child’s overall progression, literacy, and ongoing learning and also assist families to seek more specialist help when needed. Examples from practice with individual families and groups, and learnings from different communities, inform ways to ensure that services provide culturally responsive and trauma-informed opportunities for early development.
