Event description

Description

This two-day (on 18 May 2018 and 21 May 2018) workshop provides students with an introduction to the principles and application of geographical information systems (GIS) and how these techniques can be critical in decision-making. The workshop aims to provide students with an understanding of the core concepts underpinning the use and representation of spatial data through GIS, and to introduce students to recent developments in this field. A series of lectures and tutorials are used to enable students to explore the potential use of spatial data and GIS tools. Students will have access to new tutorials both from ESRI e-portal and others. General topics include a solid understanding of the importance of spatial data, data layers, functions of GIS, spatial models, spatial analysis, and more.

Upon completion of this workshop, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate and understand the nature of GIS and the functional components of GIS in the context of urban planning;

  2. Use GIS software for simple spatial information management and presentation (e.g., mapping);

  3. Gain practical knowledge that will be able to apply on a real case study (research project);

PLEASE NOTE: Only Griffith University's students and staff members can register to the workshop. Available seats are limited to 24. If the workshop is cancelled (e.g. due to insufficient numbers or other unforeseen reasons), the participants will be offered a full refund.
