Class description:
The focus of this class is drawing and painting botanical subjects in watercolour. You will learn about:
- Plant identification, structure, and parts
- Composition
- Materials and aids to drawing/painting
- Colour theory, colour-matching, mixing colours
- Fundamentals of drawing and watercolour painting
- Special techniques for creating special effects in watercolour (e.g. textures)
Materials: For best results, please bring the following to class:
Hot Press (smooth) watercolour paper. I recommend an A2 sheet of Arches brand. You can cut it into smaller size sheets. Pads of Arches are ideal, but pricey. I am not a fan of Fabriano paper, but other HP papers are fine.
Brushes. I recommend a range of decent quality brush sizes, from fine (for detail) to medium (for washes) and larger (if you are planning to add background or work big). Either animal hair (e.g. sable) or synthetic
Tracing paper. It is handy to have a pad of tracing paper for transferring sketches and working out composition
Paints. Please come with good quality, known brand watercolour paints (e.g. Winsor Newton, Cotmans, Daniel Smith, Schminke, Art Spectrum, etc.) and the following limited palette colours available in half pan:
- Yellows: Winsor Yellow or Lemon Yellow (cool yellow) and warm yellow, e.g. Cadmium Yellow
- Reds: Permanent Rose (primary magenta), warm red (e.g. Scarlet Lake or Cadmium Red) and cool red (Alizarin Crimson
- Blues: Cobalt (near primary), Ultramarine (warm blue), and Cerulean (cool blue)
Alternatively, a basic set of 12 or so paints is fine, but it would be nice if you could fill in the gaps to make sure you have most of the colours listed above.
Please note you do not have to have ALL materials for week ONE, we can supply basic materials to get you started.
