Event description

Description

Coder Academy are in the house! They are up in Coffs Harbour during this week skilling up our primary and high school teachers in using 3D printers, robotics and coding in the classroom so that our kids are more digital native than we ever thought possible.

With coding skills creeping into every sector of the workforce these days we thought we would take time to chat with the Coder Academy and local digital employers and real life coders about learning code, job opportunities, types of work and generally just get our geek on.

How many coders do we have in Coffs? What does a day in the life of a coder really look like? What kind of cool projects are they working on? What kind of person makes a good coder? What kind of career is possible? How can I get in on this gig?

We have an awesome line up of talented people to answer these and the rest of your burning questions:

Nandini Nayak is a passionate Embedded Software Engineer with over 5 years of experience in programming, design and development. Graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in telecommunication, worked in the software division at Bosch (Automotive Industry) in establishing communication between the engine of the car and the tester. Deeply interested in the intersection of technology with the society , currently working as a lead trainer at Coderacacdemy, educating young kids to learn coding in fun and interactive ways and inculcate computational thinking to solve various community problems.

Sally Browner is a former corporate executive turned passionate high school teacher turned STEM education enthusiast! She is currently the Education Partnership Manager for Coder Academy and has been working hard over the last 12 months to get more high quality STEM training to students and teachers.

Sandy Kinghorn is Chief Technical Officer at Chameleon Software which is a small local innovative software company that provides software solutions for niche markets which excel in quality and usability. Sandy has a solid background in software development, product management and technical leadership.

Ian Briggs is a product, technical and team leader with a love affair for Ruby on Rails. With over 10+ years of experience he is currently working on an exciting new startup Affinity.me which aims to make it easy for people to find and connect with other like-minded people.

What is a Salon? For those who haven't experienced a Salon before it is a relaxed learning affair where we will have all our people up the front and ready for a bit of chat and then Q&A from the audience. With plenty of time for networking before and after the Q&A.

Who should come along?

  • If you are interested in learning to code but don’t know where to start, this is the start!
  • If you want to find out what the future job opportunities in the digital sector are this will provide a great coverage of who's doing what locally and elsewhere.
  • If you are a coder, programmer, digital tech head then come along and share your experience, meet up with others working in the field, and this could be the start of a regular thing…
