Event description
5th Annual Australian Islamic Schooling Conference & Forum - A Focus on Wellbeing

About this Event

The Centre for Islamic Thought and Education (CITE), University of South Australia is hosting the 5th Annual Australian Islamic Schooling Conference and Forum - A Focus on Wellbeing - Afiya

The purpose of the annual conference is to:

  • Explore and share research on issues related to Islamic schooling in Western contexts,
  • Showcase the work of educators in Islamic schools,
  • Network with others who believe in the power and necessity of such work, and
  • Learn from one another how best to enhance teaching and learning in diverse Islamic schooling contexts.

The theme for 2020 is on wellbeing, building on the excellent scholarship of previous conferences. At AAISC5 we hope to explore the significance of wellbeing issues in Islamic schools and learn more about innovative practice around wellbeing in Islamic schools.

The theme of wellbeing (Arabic: Āfiya) is a significant concept in the Islamic tradition. The most-oft repeated supplications (du’a) that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was ‘O God, I ask you for āfiya in this world and the next.” Being a comprehensive concept, āfiya covers physical, spiritual and mental health and wellbeing.

AAICS5 will provide researchers, educators, parents and other community members with the opportunity to discuss processes, policies, pedagogies and other practices that either enhance or diminish wellbeing in and through education in Islamic schools. The conference aims to be a safe place for critical discussions, sharing experiences and insights into what works and what does not, to inspire all to work toward practice characterised by justice, and to nurture hope.
