The DIA is proud to present the 2018 annual 3x8 ACT Speaker Series. In the final event for this year, three superstar speakers, René Linssen, Jessica de Rome and Catherine Carter have been invited to share an insight into their professional creative practices. Witness first hand what makes them tick: their experiences, projects, successes and failures.

RENÉ LINSSEN www.renelinssen.com

René Linssen is a South African born, Australian industrial designer living and working in Canberra, Australia.

René loves the challenges of industrial design and finding a way to improve peoples lives with a product that satisfies a need and that can be aesthetically pleasing at the same time. He also feels strongly about the responsibilities implicit in a career that he believes has a big impact in shaping the world we live in.

René is currently an industrial designer at Australian product design company Formswell Design. He is involved in a diverse range of design work covering industries such as sports, outdoors, home wares, government and more.

JESSICA de ROME www.deromearchitects.com.au

Jessica de Rome graduated from the University of Canberra in 2004 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Architecture, and in 2007 with a Masters of Architecture. Jessica worked at several notable architecture firms in Canberra before establishing de Rome Architects in 2013. de Rome Architects focuses on creating well-considered and thoughtful architectural spaces, across the fields of single residential, multi-residential, commercial, and interior design.

Jessica is the 2017 recipient of the Emerging Architect Prize, which acknowledges contribution to architectural practice, education, design excellence and community involvement. Jessica’s residential design work has also received Commendation at the AIA Architecture Awards.

Jessica stays engaged with the architecture profession and community through various other involvements, such as through the University of Canberra Education Advisory Group, the Institute of Architects Emerging Architects Committee, and the Consult Australia FutureNet Committee. She has been a main Jury member for the ACT Architecture Awards and has contributed to various exhibitions and publications for the Institute of Architects. Jessica also works intermittently at the University of Canberra as a Sessional Tutor for architecture design studios in both the Masters and Undergraduate programs, and continues to return as a guest jury member for design critique sessions.

CATHERINE CARTER

Principal, Catherine Carter Consulting Pty Ltd

Head of the Property Council of Australia’s Canberra office for more than a decade, Catherine now provides specialist advisory services with a focus on urban environments, city building, stakeholder engagement, new forms of collaboration and diversity.

A sought-after media commentator and columnist, Catherine is a tertiary qualified and extensively networked professional with deep experience in planning policy, advocacy and strategy.

Catherine sits on a number of public and private sector boards. She was the recipient of the Telstra ACT Business Women’s Community and Government Award in 2010, and the National Association of Women in Construction Crystal Vision Award in 2017 for her work to improve the career opportunities for women in the property and construction industry.
