About this event
Inviting interaction and curiosity, celebrate the rich history of Tait and our team of Australian designers and craftspeople who embrace the highest degree of skill over a glass of Australian sparkling wine. From the hammer to robot, this 30-year retrospective as part of Melbourne Design Week 2023 explores early works, insights, unexpected paths, and the sustainable future of Tait with the launch of a new collection.
Founded by husband and wife duo, Gordon and Susan Tait, 30 years on and Tait has established a reputation as one of the leading contemporary design houses for outdoor living in Australia.
Tait is honoured to also partner with Agency and Numbulwar Numburindi Arts (NNA) during Melbourne Design Week to present an advocacy project to the art and design community which connects Indigenous artists working with the contamination of ghost nets and other ocean debris across Northern Australia. Ghost nets, or ‘fish killers’ as they are known in Numbulwar, are discarded from commercial fishing vessels and travel thousands of kilometres through the ocean, harming vulnerable marine life and coral.
A key focus of this Melbourne Design Week collaboration will be NNA master weaver, Joy Wilfred’s reimagining of Tait’s iconic Tidal chair, the design of which references ocean and wave patterns. This beautiful creative work provides a contemporary vehicle for stunning reimagining of this discarded waste material. Tait, Agency and NNA are partnering with an immersive activation; a series of talks, artists workshops, and a live studio which will highlight not only the beauty of the Numbulwar weavers practice, but at the same time elevate conversations around the use and reuse of marine debris.
