2022 Relationships & Sexuality Education in Schools: PD with Man Up

About this event

Join the Relationships, Sexuality and Education Project for this after-school professional development workshop with MAN UP.

Male Relationships is a workshop that focuses on talking to boys about the value of relationships, how to develop positive ones, and how to foster/nurture these relationships into the future. The workshop involves:

- An introduction and icebreaker (to introduce the facilitator to the group and to create a comfortable area for discussion). These may also be used to briefly discuss making the environment non-judgemental and tailoring each discussion to the specific group.

- Challenging and questioning some of the ideals that are normalised in ‘lads’ culture and understanding when behaviours, language and attitudes can be toxic. Furthermore, understanding how to be supportive as a group of mates, and support positive changes and differences amoung young boys. Discussing different strategies around call out culture.

- Realising the importance of relationships and their positive effect on our wellbeing (physical and emotional). Understanding the different types of relationships and how each relationship varies on their value, relevance, and impact in every individual’s life. Understanding the importance of giving/receiving communication in a relationship.

- Discussing what elements make up healthy relationships and how to nurture these outcomes from relationships. Identifying when relationships become problematic, and even abusive, and how you can support others and yourselves in these circumstances.

- Discussing the importance of consent and working through various scenarios to explain when consent is/isn’t given.

- Discussing the impact of porn on expectations of sex in young men.

About MAN UP: A not-for-profit, peer-to-peer education service in WA, with the goal of empowering young men and redefining masculinity. MAN UP run workshops on various topics centered around men’s mental health and well-being, with an emphasis on transforming boys into confident, purpose-driven, and emotionally capable men. Their aim is to change the phrase ‘MAN UP’ to mean something positive; to live authentically from one’s heart, embrace vulnerability, and hold one another accountable to stand up for what is right.

About The RSE Project: Based at Curtin University, The RSE Project provides a range of professional development opportunities to Western Australian schools (K-12) in the area of relationships and sexuality education (RSE). Our training aligns with the Western Australian curriculum and is suitable for all school sectors. Our focus is on supporting teachers (both pre-service and in-service) to deliver RSE in schools. As we strongly advocate that schools embrace a whole-school approach to RSE, we are keen to also support school administrators, support staff, community health nurses and others who work in schools.
