Optics: The future is meta! Professor Ann Roberts Come and join us for the sixth lecture in the 2022 Physics Gymnasium Lecture Series

About this event

Optics: The future is meta!

Professor Ann Roberts

Come and join us for the sixth lecture in the 2022 series as Prof Roberts looks at the future of optics.

The ability to control light underpins important systems such as cameras, microscopes and telescopes. These all utilise lenses as their fundamental building block. The oldest known lens dates back over two thousand years and the basic design has changed little in that time. With the drive to miniaturisation of electronic devices such as mobile phones, however, the traditional approach to focusing light relies on components that are relatively bulky compared to the associated electronics which are orders of magnitude smaller. With advances in nanoscience there is now a push to create ultracompact alternatives to traditional optical components and systems which will open up new technologies in augmented and virtual reality, self-driving vehicles and LiFi. This talk will present an overview of relevant optics, how light and matter interact on the nanoscale, and the new field of meta-optics.

This event is a live in-person event that will also be live-streamed through Zoom. The Zoom link will be sent to all ticket holders just before the event.

5:30pm: Join us for snacks and drink

6:00pm: Head into the Hercus Theatre for the interactive and entertaining lecture

7:00pm: Close

The Physics Gymnasium Lectures are open to all students, teachers and parents interested in learning some more about the amazing world of Physics. There will be links to the VCE curriculum but are open to students of all ages and background. The lectures will continue fortnightly through Term 2 and 3. Full details will be posted on the School of Physics website. https://physics.unimelb.edu.au/engage/physics-outreach

Recognition for students who attend all six lectures in the 2022 series will be awarded at the final lecture. To ensure you are in the running, please fill in the details of all attendees when registering.

Teachers and parents welcome very welcome.
