About this event
You are invited to join us for Breakfast in Perth or Bunbury to network with colleagues, celebrate National Palliative Care Week and hear from two excellent speakers.
For the first time we are pleased to be able to provide our signature PCWA Breakfast as a satellite event, simultaneously available to those located in the Perth metropolitan area as well as the South West Region. Our guest speakers will make their presentations at the Perth event at The University Club while being live-streamed to the Bunbury event at the Quality Hotel Lighthouse.
NOTE ADDED 17 MAY: Most unfortunately, Professor Charlie Corke is unable to fly to Perth due to a back injury. We can confirm that he is still making his presentation which will be on a screen in both venues, and he will still be able to answer questions.
Our guest speakers
Professor Charlie Corke
Charlie has had a long career as an Intensive Care Specialist and is past President of the College of Intensive Care of Australia and New Zealand. He is the regional clinical lead for the Advance Care Planning program for the South West Victorian Health Region, and also deputy chair of the Victorian Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board.
A strong advocate of patient centred care, Charlie is the originator of the MyValues approach to advance care planning. The MyValues website provides a set of freely available and specially constructed statements designed to help anyone to identify, consider and communicate their wishes about the medical treatment they want in the later stages of life.
With a particular interest in medical communication and end-of-life decision-making Charlie is a passionate teacher of communication skills. He is author of Letting Go (Scribe, Melbourne) which is written to empower people to take more control of their final stage of life.
Charlie will be speaking on “Communication skills in Palliative Care - little changes, big effect”.
Irene Montefiore
Once upon a time you couldn’t get Irene to talk about death – she was way too superstitious to tempt fate like that. These days, in her words, it’s a challenge getting her to stop! A career in regional radio broadcasting and training, combined with an interest in health literacy and advocacy, and having to deal with the death of some special people in her life, lead to Irene’s passion for death literacy and her involvement with Death Café, Advance Care Planning, and Compassionate Communities.
While firmly stating that she is not an expert in these matters, Irene spends a lot of time encouraging others in the community to be more open about death, and to look at better ways of planning for and dealing with the end of life.
Irene will be speaking on “Drawing back the curtain - a compassionate community approach to end of life”.

COVID-19
The health and wellbeing of our members, stakeholders, staff and the wider community remain a priority for Palliative Care WA and we are committed to the WA Government’s policies and public health directives.
It is vitally important that we ensure the palliative care, aged care and community care workforce is protected as much as possible. Given the high number of new daily cases of COVID-19 currently being reported and taking on board the advice of the WA Palliative Medicine Specialist Group, we STRONGLY RECOMMEND that all participants at this event wear a mask when not eating or drinking.
Our staff will be wearing masks, and we will have some on hand for those who require one.
Please do not attend this event if you are feeling unwell or have developed any cold or flu-like symptoms.
