This annual lecture honours the memory of Dr Diana Temple AM, a former member of the University of Sydney community and an advocate for the role of women in science.

The Diana Temple Memorial Lecturer is a woman with a distinguished career in any arm of Medicine (basic/clinical/public health) that is a leader in her field with an outstanding track record, both in research/practice but also in mentoring other researchers (particularly women), professional service and community engagement.

The 2022 Diana Temple Memorial Lecture is jointly hosted by the School of Medical Sciences and the Sydney Pharmacy School at the University of Sydney and Women in STEMM Australia.

About the speaker

Professor Sorrell AM obtained her MBBS and MD (research) from the University of Adelaide. In 1979 she returned from post-graduate training at UCLA to the University of Sydney/Westmead Hospital. There, she pioneered the establishment of infectious diseases in Australia as a specialty within internal medicine. Her research has focussed on the pathogenesis of cryptococcosis, new antifungal drug development, new diagnostics and clinical trials of antifungal diagnostic and treatment strategies. Recently, as Co-Director of the Sydney Infectious Disease institute, she has become one of the NSW and National leaders in research and clinical responses to COVID-19.

She has been awarded an AM, Payne-Scott Distinguished Professorship (University of Sydney) and the inaugural Ruthven Blackburn medal (Faculty of Medicine and Health) for her outstanding contributions as a mentor, educator, clinician and researcher. The NHMRC recognised her as one of Australia’s all time high achievers in Health and Medical Research. Professor Sorrell is a past president of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases, has served on state, national and international advisory committees in Infectious Diseases and mycology and has been a member of the Research and Human Ethics Committees of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia.
