ABOUT THE ARCHIBALD PRIZE EXHIBITION
The gallery will host the 2021 Archibald Prize from 22 January - 6 March 2022 *
Prestigious and controversial, the Archibald Prize was first awarded in 1921 following a bequest from former Art Gallery trustee JF Archibald to foster portraiture, support artists and perpetuate the memory of great Australians.
The open competition has been awarded annually to the best portrait, ‘preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in arts, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia’.
Visit the exhibition to vote for your favourite portrait in the ANZ People’s Choice award before voting closes on 9 March 2022.
For families, there are also children’s labels, a children’s trail and an activity sheet with ideas for creating your own portraits at home.
* Maitland Regional Art Gallery is closed each Monday and Public Holidays.
