2020 PC x Black Dog Gala

About this Event

Hi All!

In late 2019 a few of us were invited to attend the Black Dog Institute’s annual thank you event. During the evening we met with a number of the Institute’s staff who were blown away by the generosity of every single one of you who attended last year’s gala! Their level of gratitude, along with hearing stories of other fundraising efforts, and importantly seeing what the Institute is doing for mental health, inspired us to organize a similar event for 2020.

As everyone is sadly aware, Australia is currently being devastated by horrific bushfires. Our great nation has come together to donate funds and resources to assist in extinguishing the blaze and helping evacuees during these terrible times. However, in the aftermath of these fires, the victims will again need our support as they begin to piece together their lives. By holding this Gala, we will raise vital funds for the Black Dog Institute to assist the victims in the longer-term with their mental health. Funds raised will also assist the Black Dog Institute with their research, prevention and treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder that sadly 1 in 6 of our retired emergency service workers experiences.

We want to let people know that long-term, after the fires have burnt out, we will still be here to support those who have and continue to suffer.

Love,

Charles, Cods, Tigs, Matt, David, James, Hughes, Lamble, Max and Hugh

MORE INFORMATION

Despite increased recognition amongst the community, of the risks associated with poor mental health, facing high trauma-exposed groups, such as veterans. Targeted programs and resources to address the specific needs of first responders, remains limited.

> Sadly, 1 in 6 retired emergency service workers experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

> Every 4.3 weeks, a fire fighter, paramedic or police officer dies by suicide.

The Black Dog Institute conducts research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of PTSD. Researchers are working to develop robust, effective and evidence-based programs and tools that improve mental health outcomes for emergency service workers across Australia.

> RAW Mind Coach: An evidence-based 10-week online learning program that equips first responders with a range of psychological skills to help them better manage difficult thoughts, uncomfortable emotions and times of high stress.

> Workplace Mental Health & Wellbeing Programs: Fully qualified facilitators deliver workplace programs that look at the specific needs of each workforce to employ customized tools to increase staff engagement, mental wellbeing, and safety at work.

> HeadGear: Smartphone app-based tool which uses mindfulness and behavioral activation to improve mental fitness through mood monitoring, psychological tools, and a 30-day challenge.
