The Wal Cherry Lecture is an annual lecture in honour of Flinders University foundation professor, the late Wal Cherry.

About Mitchell Butel

Mitchell Butel is the Artistic Director of the State Theatre Company South Australia. He holds four Helpmann, two Green Room and three Sydney Theatre Awards for his work as a director and actor.

In addition to the State Theatre Company South Australia, Mitchell has worked extensively for Sydney Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre, Australian Theatre for Young People, Belvoir, Bell Shakespeare, Griffin, Malthouse, Opera Australia, The Production Company, David Atkins Enterprises, New Theatricals, Gordon Frost Organisation and for the Sydney, Adelaide and Perth Festivals. He also holds two AFI nominations for his work in Australian feature films.

As a director, Mitchell directed the Sydney and Melbourne seasons of the Hayes Theatre/Blue Saint production of Violet which received three Sydney Theatre Awards including Best Director of a Musical and Best Production of an Independent Musical, Spring Awakening (ATYP) which won the Sydney Theatre Award’s Best Production for Young People, Porgy and Bess, The Bernstein Songbook and Funny Girl (Sydney Symphony Orchestra), Sydney Philharmonia Choirs’ Carols at the House and Candide (Sydney Opera House), Marjorie Prime (Ensemble Theatre), Dead Cat Bounce (Griffin), Caroline, or Change (Hayes Theatre Co) and he co-directed An Act of God (Darlinghurst Theatre Company).

He has also written material for the Sydney Festival/Malthouse production of Meow Meow’s Little Match Girl, the Malthouse/Belvoir production of The Government Inspector, Opera Australia’s The Mikado and is currently adapting the Australian film Starstruck for RGM Productions.

Mitchell is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Music and a proud member of Actors Equity.

His 2019 Wal Cherry Lecture is titled: The Art of Imperfection.
