About this Event

You are invited to nominate up to 4 Year 6 students to participate in the 2019 Sunshine Coast Youth Parliament.

The Youth Parliament is an exciting opportunity for students in the Sunshine Coast and the surrounding region to debate a motion on a youth issue or speak in an adjournment debate about any issue falling withing the jurisdiction of the Queensland Parliament.

The Youth Parliament is hosted by the Queensland Parliament and will be chaired by the Speaker, the Honourable Curtis Pitt MP, along with local Members of Parliament.

Please note that the media often attend Youth Parliament and students may be photographed or filmed.

FAQs

How many students can I nominate?

Schools are invited to nominate up to a maximum of 4 Year 6 students.

The number of student participants allocated per school will depend on the number of schools that nominate for the Youth Parliament.

What are the commitment for students and teachers?

Initial Briefing (teachers only)

  • An initial briefing session for teachers will be held at a venue to be announced from 3.45-4.45pm on Monday 21 October. Teachers from schools participating in the Youth Parliament are required to attend this briefing to receive details of the program and other operational and administrative matters.

Second Briefing (teachers and students)

  • A second briefing to answer any last minute questions will be held on Monday 11 November from 3.45-4.30pm. This briefing is for students and teachers, and includes an activity to teach students about voting in the Youth Parliament. Students usually find this briefing valuable preparation for the Youth Parliament; however we understand that not all students will be able to attend.

Final Briefing (teachers and students)

  • Teachers and students should arrive on the day of the Youth Parliament at 9.00am to be ready for the start of the 9.30am final briefing before the Youth Parliament.

Preparation

  • Students will need to prepare a speech to present on the day.
