Event description

Description

2018 will be the 3rd annual Walk for a Veteran with PTS along the Adelaide coastline. We walk 42km in honour of the 42 ADF personnel killed in the operation in Afghanistan. We also walk for those service personnel who have taken their own lives as a result of suffering Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) developed during their ADF service.

We invite as many people as we can to join us to walk the 42km on Saturday 28 July to help raise money and awareness for veteran and emergency services PTS (post traumatic stress) programs. Funds will be donated to the assistance dog program Operation K9, and The Road Home Wellbeing Program offering assistance to veterans and emergency services personnel.

We want to raise awareness for those currently within our Defence Force and Emergency Services (SAMFS, SAPOL, SA Ambulance) who suffer from post traumatic stress and how it can impact the lives of all those close to them.

Starting at 0600hrs at Seacliff our group will make our way along the coast to the Largs Bay RSL for lunch before returning back to the finish line at the Henley and Grange RSL at approx 1600hrs for offical speeches and presenations. We finish with dinner and a live band for those with the energy to stay and for those who couldnt make it on the walk. .

There is a requirement to carry a back pack of any weight, even if 5kg. However there will be an expectation that those not carrying weight will donate extra.

Re-enact SA (inc.) http://www.reenactsa.com/ will again inspire the group by providing a Colur party in and out of our scheduled stops and join the walk from Largs Pier. Re-enact SA is a group of South Australian WW1 and WW2 enthusiasts who promote and participate in historical reenactment in South Australia and interstate.

Barossa Light Horse Historical Association will again join our walk from Largs Pier to Henley. Barossa Light Horse Historical Association takes its name from the 23rd Light Horse Regiment, Barossa Light Horse. The group participated with 8 horses in 2017, with horse and rider dressed in WW1 Light Horse uniform.

Joining us again will be former Rugby League star now international mental health speaker Joe Williams from The Enemy Within http://www.joewilliams.com.au. Joe will walk with us, sharing his stories and provide some of us with some much needed inspiration. Joe will again present to the larger group at the RSL after the walk on suicide prevention and mental health wellbeing. Joe will also be launching his new book http://www.harpercollins.com.au/9780733338755/defying-the-enemy-within/ whilst he is in Adelaide during for the walk and will be signing copies at the end at Henley and Grange RSL.

Our guest military speaker will be Captain David West RANR. CAPT West’s service history covers land based health centres and time at sea, posted to nursing billets of all officer ranks. In his former role as a perioperative nurse, he was involved in the design and planning of the health facility on the amphibious ships Manoora and Kanimbla. More recently he has been instrumental in promoting nursing in the multi-disciplinary field of military mental health.

CAPT West has served as part of the mental health screening (RtAPS) teams on HMA Ships Melbourne, Darwin, Kanimbla, Stuart, Parramatta and Newcastle returning from operations in the Middle East Area of Operations, HMAS Kanimbla on return from Op Sumatra Assist II, and HMAS Tobruk’s task in Op Resolute border protection. CAPT West has been the Director of Naval Health Reserve SA&NT, and the Chairman of the Regional Health Advisory Group for South Australia.

South Australian Liberal Leader and Shadow Minister for Veterans Affairs Steven Marshall is the Patron of Walk for a Veteran with PTS. Steven is extremely passionate about working with the defence community in SA to provide a better outcome for all.

Either commit to walking or donate today to make a difference in those veterans and emergency services workers lives. Lets get around the people who serve our nation and communities and say thank you, and help them when they need our help.
