2018 – The year for L&D Professionals to make ideas flourish into actions

The role of Learning and Development (L&D) professionals in supporting organisational growth are often debated and unfortunately derided. In many organisations, along with old style IT departments, Human Resources and L&D teams are often seen as ‘barriers’ to creativity and innovation, and the advancement of ideas into action.

The systems, regulations, and procedures they inadvertently put in place to ‘prevent’ ideas from being generated and developed are significant. They mean well but are blinded by old-style thinking and adherence to bad policies and procedures.

Firewalls, employees denied access to social media, a lack of creativity in L&D workshop delivery, limited ability to search online for new and relevant information, limiting PDs and stifling KPIs (position descriptions and performance indicators), plus CEOs and executive teams intent on maintaining the ‘status quo’ to protect their positions, prevent many organisations from meeting the needs of their people to embrace the challenges of this century. The fear of failure (risk avoidance) and out-of-date thinking is making them obsolete in a new world.

At a time when governments (don’t get me started) and organisation leaders espouse the need for new ideas and innovative approaches, what we are actually seeing is the stifling of creative thinking, and the rapid shut down of ideas. It is like a ‘whack the idea” game. Kill it before it gets started.

This ILP event will be particularly important for L&D and HR directors, managers, and professionals working in-house with organisations, as well as independent ILP professionals seeking to support them.

Join us for the first 2018 ILP ‘On The Learning Couch’ event on 21st February. Hosted by ILP Fellow and Certified Learning Professional (CLP) Bill Jarrard, with Guest Speaker his good friend Jason Cotton, MD of the Nucleus, this evening will flow as follows:

5:30 - Registration and informal networking over drinks and snacks
6:00 - Welcome by Bill Jarrard, overview of this event and activity
6:20 - Bill Jarrard: Moving from Insights to Actions – Deliberate Creative Thinking - What it takes to create a culture of innovation and the role of L&D professionals

6:45 - Jason Cotton: IdeasBank to move ideas in actions - Demo of an ‘idea building’ system that promotes a culture of creativity and innovation.

7:15 - Open discussion and sharing of ideas with all participants
7:45 - Wrap up and a look at ILP events and focus in 2018.
8:00 - More informal networking over drinks and snacks (and help Bill clean up).

‘The true source of power in any company today is ideas - the rest is housekeeping.’
