Description

'GROWING SMARTER'

A moment of opportunity for the economic development of Newcastle and the Hunter? The Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan, the pending completion of the Newcastle light rail project, more than $1 billion of development approvals in the city in the past 12 months, and announcement of significant Federal and State funding for cities and regions.

How to take full advantage of these opportunities and togrow smarteris a theme for our Hunter economic breakfast for May.

Australia’s economy maintained its real GDP growth in the December quarter. That marks 26 years of uninterrupted economic growth. In the Hunter, business performance reached decade highs throughout 2017.

Yet not everyone is sharing equally in the region’s or the nation’s economic success. CEDA says that inequality can weigh on future economic performance and prosperity. Unequal income and employment outcomes can adversely impact capital, skills formation and productivity, according to research that CEDA are releasing in April.

Our second breakfast for 2018 will examine economic prosperity and inequality.

CEDA's CEO, Melinda Cilento, will discuss CEDA's new report - How unequal? Insights on inequality. The research characterises the effects of such inequality and highlights challenges that Australia faces into the future.

Additionally, respected social researcher Hugh Mackay will discuss his new book - Australia Reimagined. The book suggests why Australia's unprecedented run of economic growth has failed to deliver a more stable and harmonious society.

The HRF Centre’s Dr Anthea Bill will put these discussions in context by examining indicators of social inequality in the Hunter.

Join 250+ other guests on 11 May. Be informed, challenged, inspired and 'connected'.
