Professor David Ekers will present the 2018 Dick Lefroy Ortation.

"A simple behavioural intervention to treat and prevent depression in older adults."

Professor David Ekers is a Nurse Consultant in Primary Care Mental Health at TEWV NHS FT and Honorary Visiting Professor at the Mental Health and Addictions Research Group (MHARG), University of York, UK. He combines clinical, research and leadership roles. Professor Ekers is internationally recognised as an expert on Behavioural Activation (BA) for depression. His research is highly cited and has led the way in developing the evidence base to support this practical intervention beyond traditional therapy settings. His research findings have informed the UK NICE guidelines and clinical practice. He is the Chief Investigator on two National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded programmes of research exploring BA in health promotion and in older adults with mental-physical multi-morbidity. He is an international collaborator with the University of West Australia on the BAN-Dep Study evaluating innovative approaches to the delivery of BA in residential home settings in Australia.

In his talk he will explain BA, how it simple talking treatment suited to adults and older adults in a range of settings. He will outline findings from research and how it is being developed in new studies to meet future health priorities across the globe.
